If the contact info is reflective of your friend, he will have to transfer the domain to your management, and then you can put it on any host you want.

If it has the hosting company contact info - they were the registrants as part of the hosting deal, and they retail control of the domain.

However - you can contact the primary hosting service, explain your situation, and they may be able to give you direct control of the webspace (FTP, Control Panel), and then you can change the site content.  You would probably have to take over hosting charges.
