What does it cost to register a domain name?
Also, I have some hosting allowed through my internet provider but would like to have a nice domain name that links to my site. Is that possible to do with little cost (I can probably find a friend to set up the link)?

I know a bit about websites (but very little), I am just wondering what it costs to register a name. Is it a one time or yearly?

I think it costs about $20 per year for the domain name, and they throw in url forwarding to wherever your website is hosted along with email.
They got their name because originally they gave you a free domain name, and advertisements paid for it. But now we gotta pay, but it is a low price.

Hi there. It can cost as little as $7.19 to register a .com domain name at GoDaddy.com (the initial price will be around $10, but you can find plenty of coupon codes e.g. yhkw105a). That gives you ownership of the domain for 1 year. You can purchase additional years at the time of purchase or you can renew it annually.
You can also purchase domains at other locations such as eBay, Sedo, SnapNames, etc. for less or more than that, depending on how much you are willing to pay. Hope this helps and good luck with your website!

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: http://www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
