I am wanting to create a e-commerce style shopping system website but am new to the whole process when it comes to asp and php. i have some background knowledge of html building.
or does anyone know any free hosting sites for this sort of application.

You have to find a shopping cart software to do this. You can download this from web ( search it).

Many hosting companies also offer e-commerce add ons for their hosting at a pretty small cost. I use stargateinc.com and they have e-commerce functions built into their sitemanager for about $8/month
Paypal has a nice system for intrating your shopping site with them. You create the front end and then send the user to Paypal for payment.
Ebay has free shops you can setup to sell and so does amazon, called zshops.
If you aren’t up to speed on asp or php i would recommend that you don’t try to build the payment processing your self. this can be tricky and you would hate to have major problems when you are dealing with peoples credit cards. You also have extra costs like setting up the merchant account, buying and installing an SSL, and of course all the development and testing time.

A good (and FREE) solution is osCommerce. (www.oscommerce.com) Just get a LAMP system set up (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) and install and configure osCommerce.
