Can you put a commercial website on a .org domain name?
I have a .org domain name and I was wanting to sell it but I was wondering if the person I sold it to would be able to build a commercial website on it?

No, technically they could.
Originally intended for non-profit groups and organizations, .ORG is also an unrestricted top level domain. Many non-profit organizations use .ORG names, but many, especially those that receive a lot of visits from the public, also register the .COM name if available.
Some opportunists have registered the .COM name for popular .ORG websites, hoping to profit from miss-typed domain names. If your site will receive a large amount of traffic from the general public, you should register both the .COM and .ORG names for your domain.

Sho nuff.
Only a few top-level domains are actually regulated to that degree, and .org isn’t one of them (.edu and .gov are good examples though).
Originaly, .org was planned for reservation for use by non-profit organizations. Just like .net was originally for internet service providers. This idea has since become obsolete, and .com has become an all-purpose top-level domain, with others existing as a compliment to it.
So sell away…whoever owns it can do with it what they want.

Though initially .org was set up for non-profit organizations, there is no restriction upon this use. You may want to consider the message you sending by using a .org but it’s certainly allowed. For an example of the message you can compare:
